Electric, gas and telephone utilities serve millions of customers in Georgia, but there are many customers who can't afford gas, electricity or basic phone service without the help of payment assistance programs. Many electric, gas, and telephone utility companies offer payment plans to their customers who qualify. They may allow deferred payment for those who cannot pay their whole bill or delay disconnection for customers trying to pay their bills. Many civic groups, charitable organizations, and churches in local communities provide payment assistance to low income customers. For more information, contact your gas, electric, or telephone service provider.
As Georgia, as well as the United States, experiences the spread of COVID-19, it is important to keep not only our workforce healthy in order to maintain Commission operations, but also the other citizens of the state. One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of this virus is social distancing.
To achieve this goal, I would like to encourage all individuals making filings at the Commission to utilize the Alternative Electronic Filing Procedures outlined below. The office is still open at this time and UPS and FEDEX are still making deliveries to the Commission as well as the United States Postal Service. The Alternative Electronic Filing Procedures are being put in place to allow for limited person to person contact and achieve the goal of social distancing.

Georgia Public Service Commission
The mission of the Georgia Public Service Commission is to exercise its authority and influence to ensure that consumers receive safe, reliable and reasonably priced telecommunications, electric and natural gas services from financially viable and technically competent companies.
June 15, 2021 – (ATLANTA) – The Georgia Public Service Commission voted unanimously today to reduce a landline phone fee as a 10-year statutory program sunsets.
In 2011, the PSC began implementing a new state law that required telecommunications carriers to reduce the rates they charge each other to complete long distance calls. The practical effect of the law was to bring the costs for in-state long distance calls in line with the costs for out-of-state long distance calls. Prior to implementation by the PSC, it would often cost significantly more to place an in-state long distance call than to call across the country using a landline.
Having now fully implemented this program over a period of 10 years, the PSC voted unanimously on Tuesday to reduce the “Universal Access Fund” fee by 37.5% percent to account for the sunsetting program. The fee will drop from 6.00% to 3.75% on monthly bills beginning July 1, 2021.
“The bottom line is: business and individual customers in Georgia will see a savings on their phone bills,” said PSC Commissioner Tricia Pridemore, the chair of the PSC Telecommunications Committee. “This is welcome news for anyone with a landline phone.”
